Closed-Back, Circum-Aural High-Fidelity Headphones

Elegia is the first set of audiophile-quality circum-aural closed-back headphones from Focal. Integrating the best of their exclusive technologies, Elegia guarantees remarkable listening quality - everywhere and anywhere. Each & every component has undergone cutting-edge research, and has been meticulously considered. Sound reproduction is precise, and power is certainly not lacking.

Focal has been releasing high-fidelity headphones since 2016, beginning with the Elear and the Utopia, and then the Clear later in 2017. All of these are open-back headphones, and in 2018 Focal introduced the Elegia, the company’s first high-fidelity closed-back headphones.

Superb Technologies

Focal has brought together the best of its technologies in this product. Elegia incorporates a new generation 40mm driver capable of operating in a small inner environment reproducing frequencies from a subsonic 5Hz to a nearly supersonic 23kHz while ensuring exceptional dynamics. This is thanks to its motor, the frameless copper voice coil, the dedicated 110-micron surround, and amazing "M”-shaped dome.

Exceptional Comfort

Elegia is designed for use with portable audio players, and has a low impedance of 35 Ohms. Focal incorporated vents to ensure zero resonance, and the comfort is truly great, something at which Focal excels. Elegia’s soundproofing is excellent, helped by its plush memory foam/microfibre ear pads (which further add to the comfort). The headband molds perfectly to the head, providing optimal grip for on-the-go use. The use of materials such as leather, microfibre fabric, and solid aluminium give Elegia its elegant style.

Designed For Audiophiles

Elegia is for audiophiles who desire quality whenever and wherever they want, without worrying about a noisy environment interfering with their music.

Focal also included a thermo-formed hardshell case to keep the Elegia safe from drops, spills, and anything else that life may throw at you. Like all Focal products, the Elegia is designed and developed in France.

Reviews

Firstly a huge thanks to Audio Sanctuary for managing to get the headphones before their official release (as I was travelling through the UK at the time). Communication was great and service top-notch.

Impressions of the headphones, whilst still early days, are very positive. They have an incredible energy that really gets the toe tapping. Detail retrieval is very good; not quite HD800 levels. They do not have the delineation, air and separation of the 800's but they have a full, meaty solidity that is more palpable and realistic. They have quite an intimate presentation, attributed to the smaller and more compact soundstage. Only in comparison to the HD800 may it come across slightly "congested" but only in comparison - these are more open than almost all other dynamic headphones.

Bass weight and accuracy is one of the key features of the Elear. Together with the upper range dynamics, music has a visceral feel that I have not experienced before. Mids and hights are aticulate and smooth. Again, only in comparison to the 800's do they sound a little subdued (e.g., vocals not quite as clear). Having said that, for a lot of music, the Elears are more suitable.

Looking forward to hearing what these do after some burn-in; during which the midrange and soundstage should open up a little. Over and above the sound itself, one positive to mention is the incredible build quality - from the presentation box with magnetic covers through to the cable, headband and pads. They are heavy, but comfortable due to the well-padded head band and even distribution. The cable is rock-solid and at about 4m is a breath of fresh air from short and poor quality stock cables that many headphones come with.
