Portable DACs
As you may have guessed, portable DACs - sometimes called mobile DACs or personal DACs - are simply a much smaller version of the desktop digital-to-analogue converter. While the DAC itself is usually a high-precision microchip set within an integrated circuit, the portable part covers all the other related components which have to be reorganised and miniaturised. This includes power batteries, recharging ports, any wireless transmitters / receivers, input / output connections and related circuitry, plus all switches, dials, knobs, touch controls and displays.
Whilst many portable DACs just perform the essential D-to-A conversion task very well, some also contain headphone amplifiers and other functionality, such as EQ or DSP. All such devices are intended to vastly improve upon the standard built-in DAC of your source device.
